“I wish we saw you years ago” is the phrase I most often hear from my clients"

After the first tutorial in my Bachelor of Commerce degree, I put my hand up and asked, “is the rest of accounting like this?” I was told it was and I decided then and there I did not want to be an accountant. But I finished the degree with a double major in Finance & Financial Accounting as I figured it was a useful degree to have.

I took part-time job as a personal assistant to a financial adviser when I was 19 as I wanted some sort of office experience for my resume. I had no idea what financial planning was at the time, but from my position in the office I could hear the adviser’s conversations with clients through the partition.

I discovered that Financial Planning was different to accounting it wasn’t just about money it was people and money. In my accounting degree we had been looking at the past and things that had happened. But Financial Planning was all about looking at the future so you could plan and have more control about what would happen. It made sense to me to concentrate on the future on things that you still could change.

Eventually, I earned my license to be an adviser in 2005. By 2008, I became a partner in the business.

We worked with people who were just about to retire or who had already retired. I would hear many of these clients say, “I wish we saw you years ago” and I felt frustrated that I couldn’t change their outcome.

That inspired me to make a change. In 2013, I decided that I would only work with people in their 20s, 30s and 40s where I still had time to make an impact. I founded Firefly Wealth, started the Savings Squad, and now work with people like you to help them reach financial success starting now.

IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN FINANCE, IT’S ABOUT EMPOWERING OTHERS TOO

In addition to serving people as a leading authority on financial advice for those in their 20s, 30s and 40s, I’ve been involved with the Business Enterprise Centre Women in Business Mentoring Program for several years. I love helping other women start their own businesses and helping others move past obstacles that make them feel stuck so they can take their efforts to the next level.

I also founded “The High Tea For Happiness” event to give women in small businesses a chance to showcase their product and have more confidence. We also raised $5,000 for a local women’s shelter.

And I’m proud of my involvement in the Beacon Project, where I got to speak to students about financial planning as a career choice and I tried to encourage more women to become financial advisers.
